Three Alarm Fire Breaks Out At East Ridge Baptist Church

Friday, June 06, 2008

A three-alarm fire broke out at the East Ridge Baptist Church around noon on Friday.

At approximately 12:04 p.m., East Ridge Fire/Rescue responded to the church at 4201 Ringgold Road.

Crews arrived in less than one minute to find heavy smoke coming from the rear of the sanctuary. The church was being evacuated while the crews attempted to find the source of the smoke.

An all call was sent for all East Ridge Fire personnel as well as a request mutual aid from surrounding agencies. The city of Fort Oglethorpe, city of Rossville, Walker County, Memorial EMS and Catoosa County fire departments responded to aid in fighting the fire. Hamilton County Rescue responded with the mobile air unit and for firefighter rehab.
Because of the extreme heat, crews had to rotate in and out of the building to avoid heat exhaustion. Firefighters were able to contain the fire to the rear portion of the sanctuary and prevent its spread. The quick action of firefighters prevented the loss of the church, officials said.

A roofing crew was working on the roof at the time of the fire. However, East Ridge fire and arson investigators are working to find the cause and origin of the blaze. Foul play is not believed to have caused the fire at this time. Damage is estimated at $50,000 to $100,000.

Church staff said that Sunday school services will be held as normal. Worship services will be held in the activities building.

Thank You, Judge Mattice And Chattanooga

I would like to thank Judge Mattice for handing down a 30.5 year sentence for Kathleen Mathews.  Obviously, no amount of jail time, fines, or lashings can bring back Tim Chapin.   A 30-year sentence will, however, make the world just a little safer.  That's what Sgt. Chapin would have wanted.  He was a protector and sacrificed his life so the rest of ... (click for more)
