Sen. Bob Corker (R-TN), a former Dixie Youth baseball player, commented today on the 50th anniversary of the tournament which begins on July 13 in Chattanooga.
Corker reflected on the lessons learned as a former Dixie Youth player.
“Playing Dixie Youth baseball taught me valuable lessons — to be able to compete while maintaining good sportsmanship, to shake hands with your opponents after the game, and the importance of discipline – these principles are important whether it’s in business or the arena I’m in right now,” said Corker.
Corker was an All-Star pitcher for Signal Mountain in 1964. He and teammate, Briscoe Carter, pitched no-hitters in the sub-district Dixie Youth Baseball Tournament held at Red Bank Junior High School.
Corker and teammates defeated St. Elmo, 20-0, and Corker had three singles in addition to his no-hitter pitching performance.
