Two educational courses are being offered by the Chattanooga History Center.
* SHORT HISTORY OF CHATTANOOGA
The Chattanooga History Center, in cooperation with the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga will offer a series, A Short History of Chattanooga, at 7:00pm on Thursdays, July 17, 24, and 31.
This program is being presented in response to the large number of people who, due to the small venue, were unable to register for the same series presented at the History Center in June.
UTC is making its Card Family Auditorium available for all three sessions. The Auditorium is located on the UTC campus in the Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Science Building located at Vine and Palmetto Streets.
This mini-course will examine our city’s many layers of human experience, including what happened, the ways Chattanooga’s story has been told, and new ways to tell it for the next generation.
The instructor will be History Center Curator, Dr. Daryl Black. The program is free to the public and preregistration is not required.
* NATIONAL HISTORY DAY KIDS' WORKSHOP
The Chattanooga History Center will present A National History Day Kids’ Workshop for rising 6th graders through rising seniors (12th graders) from 9:00am-12:00noon on Tuesday, July 29th, Thursday, July 31st, and Tuesday, August 5th.
Admission is free. Preregistration is required, however, and the registration deadline is Tuesday, July 22nd. Workshop slots are limited and registration will be accepted on a first come, first served basis.
Two hundred and two youngsters participated in the Southeastern Tennessee Regional History Day Competition, hosted by the Chattanooga History Center, in 2008, with seven regional entries going on to take prizes at the state competition, and one entry taking a prize in the national contest.
The History Center takes great pride in these achievements, and is offering this workshop to help young people develop and refine the skills needed for execution of history projects for competition in the National History Day series.
The workshop is open to youngsters in the Southeast Tennessee Region, which includes the following counties: Hamilton, Bradley, Polk, Marion, Grundy, Franklin, and Sequatchie.
The first day of the workshop will cover selection of a category and a topic. The second will cover development of the project, and, at the third, participants will have the opportunity to present and to learn about the judging process.
Participants will be creating projects, and will be responsible for obtaining their own supplies. The instructor will be History Center Curator, Dr. Daryl Black, assisted by past History Day winners.
