A news site for the metals industry says Huntsville, Ala., appears likely to land a Volkswagen plant rather than Chattanooga.
Metal Bulletin Ltd. said the plant is expected to go to a site in Limestone County near Huntsville.
It says Chattanooga might end up with a runnerup award of a Volkswagen engine plant instead of getting the main plant.
Local officials have long been touting the Enterprise South Industrial Park as a prime location for an automotive plant.
There has been a flurry of activity at Enterprise South in recent weeks, including wholesale clearing of a megasite. Steps are underway to reroute two creeks around the megasite and to rebuild the railroads at the old VAAP site.
Volkswagen management in Germany is expected to finalize a decision next Tuesday, then get board approval on July 16.
Metal Bulletin said Volkswagen likes the fact that the Alabama site is near the Huntsville Space Center and a highly skilled workforce.
