Gov. Phil Bredesen has reappointed Mattie Moran to the State Workforce Development Board as a representative of the private sector. Her term will last through June 30, 2011.

Ms. Moran, who serves as director of workforce development and education for the Chattanooga Chamber of Commerce, was appointed to the board in 2005.

The board consists of 26 members, including Dr. Steve Copeland of Cookeville, who serves as chairman. Other members include Matt Kisber, Tennessee Department of Economic and Community Development Commissioner, and Kenny Smith of Chattanooga, training director of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers and chairman of the Hamilton County School Board.

The board is charged with delivering a workforce development system that generates opportunities, illustrates to the private sector the value of partnerships and promotes Tennessee as a place where people choose to live and work.

The board meets quarterly in Nashville.

“I am anxious to fill our state boards and commissions with the most highly qualified people, and it would be an honor to have your continued service,” Gov. Bredesen said in his reappointment letter to Ms. Moran. “I have great confidence in your abilities and in the contribution you are making.”

Ms. Moran develops and supervises the Chamber’s career readiness programs which reach all 15,000 Hamilton County Schools 8th through 12th graders every year. The programs familiarize students with occupations, help them grasp the challenges of household budgeting and stress the connection between education and future income.

Ms. Moran coordinates a key Chamber committee – the Workforce Development Committee - and several subcommittees. She helped pilot the Career Readiness Certificate in Hamilton County. The portable credential attesting to the certificate holders’ work skills is now honored across the state.

Ms. Moran works with business prospects to determine their workforce needs and with community leaders to recruit and train people for the jobs. As a member of the Rapid Response Team, she assists workers who have lost jobs through lay-offs or closings by providing information and counseling. She also refers them to the online list of available jobs at chattanoogahasjobs.com, a Chamber website she manages.

This year Ms. Moran was among 10 women honored with the Unbossed and Unbought Award, presented by Girls Inc. to women who have made outstanding contributions to the community and serve as role models.
