Victim In Serious Condition; Car Has 13 Bullet Holes

Monday, August 11, 2008

A Chattanooga man is in serious condition after a vehicle pulled up and multiple shots were fired at him early Monday morning.

Stephen Bryant, 22, told police he encountered the heavy gunfire after returning from a late night run to the Waffle House.

He said he had just returned to 3003 5th Ave. around 3 a.m. when a red Cavalier pulled in front of the house. He said the suspects began firing at him while he was backing into the driveway.

When he realized he could not escape the gunfire, he said he pulled out of the driveway and drove in the opposite direction of the Cavalier.

He eventually ended up at the intersection of E. 27th Street and 2nd Avenue where he called police to say he had been shot. Police found Bryant suffering from multiple gunshots to both arms. He was immediately transported to Erlanger Hospital, where he was listed in serious condition.

He said there were four suspects in the red Cavalier possibly wearing red. A canvas of the area yielded no results, but police are actively searching for the vehicle.

Police examined the victim’s vehicle, which had more than 13 bullet holes all over.

Police said the motive for the shooting is not clear at this point in the investigation.
