Denice Franke
Denice Franke

Texas singer and songwriter Denice Franke returns to Charles & Myrtle’s Coffeehouse on Saturday at 8 p.m.

Review for Denice Franke:
Franke (pronounced "Frankie" -- the name she answers to as readily as her first) is on a CD release tour with her latest recording "Gulf Coast Blue" - officially released Aug. 5.

Franke's career is rooted firmly in her gift for singing (noted supporting vocalist to Texas' one and only Nanci Griffith), and an intuition for penning songs that get under the skin. She accompanies herself on the guitar with grace, and skill, and a repertoire of rhythms that rock listeners gently in place as they take in the 'movie' each song projects.

Produced by Mark Hallman (Carole King, Eliza Gilkyson), Gulf Coast Blue is a series of portraits and postcards straight out of Franke’s new hometown of Galveston Island. It’s an invitation to terrains internal and external, beautiful and complex. There's grit and danger here. There are secrets revealed and secrets kept close, and motorcycles and sad motels.

For decades Franke has worked back roads and highways, touring and recording with Nanci Griffith and Eric Taylor, Hal Ketchum and plenty of other notables. After all that, she has emerged with a bag of beguiling words and melodies and with a wholly unique way of singing and playing for people.

There is a $10 suggested donation at the door. Doors open at 7 p.m. The show is at 8 p.m. Charles & Myrtle’s Coffehouse is located at 105 McBrien Road inside Christ Unity Church.

Thoughs On The Mathews Sentencing

It is not by coincidence I haven’t submitted an opinion piece in some time to the Chattanoogan.  The topics I cover are generally vitriolic in regards to local political decisions and their makers regarding public safety and I do not wish to associate my name with more noble subjects such as that of the heroic death and cowardly murder of Chattanooga Police Sergeant Tim Chapin, ... Thank You, Judge Mattice And Chattanooga

I would like to thank Judge Mattice for handing down a 30.5 year sentence for Kathleen Mathews.  Obviously, no amount of jail time, fines, or lashings can bring back Tim Chapin.   A 30-year sentence will, however, make the world just a little safer.  That's what Sgt. Chapin would have wanted.  He was a protector and sacrificed his life so the rest of ... (click for more)
