Potter's Brentwood Academy Squad Rolls Past Baylor

Friday, September 19, 2008 - by special report to The Chattanoogan

It was a sweet homecoming of sorts Friday night for former Baylor coach Ralph Potter.

Potter, who coached at Baylor before becoming the head man at his alma mater – rival McCallie – led his Brentwood Academy squad past Baylor, 42-21, in a Division II high school football game Friday night at Heywood Stadium.

Potter left McCallie and took the head-coaching job two years ago at Brentwood Academy. It was his first trip back to Baylor as the Brentwood coach.

Brentwood improved to 4-1 overall and 2-0 in the DII standings. Baylor dropped to 2-2 and 0-2.

Brentwood, which beat two-time defending Class 5A state champion Smyrna by 13-0 last week, took a 7-0 lead on a 4-yard run by Victor Caro.

Baylor responded with a 1-run touchdown run from Sam Williams and a 47-yard touchdown pass from Charlie Wilson to Brett Murray.

Brentwood rallied and scored on a 6-yard pass from Cody Nelson to Weldon Garlington. Baylor scored again as Murray ran 4 yards for a score and the Red Raiders led, 21-13, at halftime.

Baylor didn’t score in the second half, but Brentwood put up 29 points.

Joshua Pleasant scored on a 69-yard pass from Nelson and Garlington caught a 60-yard touchdown pass from Nelson. Caro then scored on touchdown runs of 9 and 13 yards.

Williams had 106 yards rushing on 30 attempts for Baylor and Joshua Tate rushed for 163 yards on 23 carries for Brentwood. Tate ran for a conversion.

Brandon Pickett had an interception for Baylor.

Georgia Northwestern Falls To Crown 73-60

The Bobcats have exactly 18 days to re-shape their game plan for their first ever NJCAA post-season appearance. A shortened roster struck by injuries throughout the 2011-12 campaign left Georgia Northwestern with only seven uniformed players in the home stand finale Monday night at The R.A.C. versus Crown College (TN).  In their final home game, the Bobcats played an extremely ... Vince Dean Picks Up For Senate Race; Tommie Brown Headed For Contest With JoAnne Favors

Rep. Vince Dean has picked up papers to run for the Senate District 10 seat now held by Democrat Andy Berke. And Rep. Tommie Brown picked up papers to retain her District 28 seat. That sets up a clash with Rep. JoAnne Favors, who picked up for District 28 earlier. Under Republican redistricting, Rep. Favors wound up in the Brown district. Rep. Dean, a Republican from East ... Thank You, Judge Mattice And Chattanooga

I would like to thank Judge Mattice for handing down a 30.5 year sentence for Kathleen Mathews.  Obviously, no amount of jail time, fines, or lashings can bring back Tim Chapin.   A 30-year sentence will, however, make the world just a little safer.  That's what Sgt. Chapin would have wanted.  He was a protector and sacrificed his life so the rest of ... (click for more)

Roy Exum: What 17 Pills Did To Me

Ah, step into my parlor of first-hand wisdom because, in the School of Hard Knocks, there are priceless lessons that you should know before it becomes your turn to dance. Never in my life have I ever had any back problems but, in early December, I came down with what is called sciatica and I have been a miserable man ever since. There are two big nerves that sprout out of the ... (click for more)
