Cothran Lifts Soddy-Daisy Girls To Region 3-AAA Golf Title With 72

Lady Trojans Dominate With 1-2-4 Finish

Wednesday, September 24, 2008 - by special report to The Chattanoogan

CROSSVILLE, Tenn. – Soddy-Daisy’s girls dominated the Region 3-AAA high school golf tournament on Wednesday at the Deer Creek Golf Course.

Junior Haley Cothran fired an even-par 72 for medalist honors in leading the Soddy-Daisy team back to the state tournament in two weeks.

Jessica Cathey finished second for the Lady Trojans, defeating Cumberland County’s Stormi Henley for second place in a playoff. Cathey and Henley each shot 86.

Soddy-Daisy’s Lexi Stewart placed fourth at 89.

"It was absolutely awesome,'' Soddy-Daisy coach Mike Pala said. "It is a privilege to coach these young girls.

"They really grinded it out today on a very tough golf course. It was a very deserving win for us.''

Pala was especially proud of Cothran.

"She was 2-under at one time,'' he said. "Her consistency really paid off. She hit at least 75 percent of the fairways in regulation.''

Also qualifying for the state tournament along with the Soddy-Daisy team were Henley, Walker Valley’s Avery George (92), Bradley Central’s Chelsea Rakestraw (92) and Bradley Central’s Kirby Deal (94).

"This was our first region title in three or four years,'' Pala said. "Walker Valley had been dominating this tournament.

"But we've got a lot of young girls and our future is bright.''

The Region 3-AAA boys tournament will be held on Monday, Sept. 29, at the Bear Trace Course in Crossville.

Charlie Peavyhouse Is Irreplaceable

I was saddened to read where Charlie Peavyhouse passed away several days ago, and then my sadness turned to joy.   The joy stems from knowing Charlie for more than a decade and knowing the reach he had in this community. Whether it was as an educator, a political activist, a wildlife lover or one of the best gardeners around, he was very instrumental in a vast number of ... (click for more)
