Two of the top Class AAA teams in the state and two of the top Division II teams met in the semifinals of the Choo Choo Classic volleyball tournament on Saturday at East Ridge.

Red Bank and Dobyns-Bennett battled in one semifinal, but the Lady Lions fell in two games, 25-18, 25-18.

GPS met Father Ryan in the other semifinal with the Bruisers coming out on top in three games, 17-25, 25-22, 15-9.

In the championship match, GPS fell in two games, 25-23, 25-21.

GPS had defeated Dobyns-Bennett earlier in the day.

Head coach Paul Brock was pleased with his team's play despite losing in the finals.

"We played really well to today," Brock said. "We beat them earlier, but I think we just ran out of gas."

GPS was 9-1 in the tournament. Beating Father Ryan in the semifinals was a highlight for Brock and the Bruisers.

"That's huge. Father Ryan is one of the best teams in Division II," Brock said. "It's always good to beat your foes."

Red Bank lost all three pool play matches on Saturday morning, losing to Dobyns-Bennett, GPS and Cookeville.

The Lady Lions then won two straight in bracket play beating Sullivan South and Soddy-Daisy before falling to Dobyns-Bennett in the semifinals.

Red Bank and Soddy-Daisy will play in a district match on Tuesday.

The Baylor volleyball team won the silver division championship at Red Bank beating Cleveland 25-20, 25-14. The Red Raiders beat Warren County, Grace and Morristown East all in the three games in bracket play.

"We were runner-up silver champion last year," Baylor head coach Lynne Stopford said. "So this is a good improvement to work hard through the day and finish so strong in the last match of the tournament. I was very pleased with the effort the team put in during bracket play. I am so pleased to see this fighting spirit come out during today's play."

Baylor is now 10-6 on the season.

Georgia Northwestern Falls To Crown 73-60

The Bobcats have exactly 18 days to re-shape their game plan for their first ever NJCAA post-season appearance. A shortened roster struck by injuries throughout the 2011-12 campaign left Georgia Northwestern with only seven uniformed players in the home stand finale Monday night at The R.A.C. versus Crown College (TN).  In their final home game, the Bobcats played an extremely ... Vince Dean Picks Up For Senate Race; Tommie Brown Headed For Contest With JoAnne Favors

Rep. Vince Dean has picked up papers to run for the Senate District 10 seat now held by Democrat Andy Berke. And Rep. Tommie Brown picked up papers to retain her District 28 seat. That sets up a clash with Rep. JoAnne Favors, who picked up for District 28 earlier. Under Republican redistricting, Rep. Favors wound up in the Brown district. Rep. Dean, a Republican from East ... Thank You, Judge Mattice And Chattanooga

I would like to thank Judge Mattice for handing down a 30.5 year sentence for Kathleen Mathews.  Obviously, no amount of jail time, fines, or lashings can bring back Tim Chapin.   A 30-year sentence will, however, make the world just a little safer.  That's what Sgt. Chapin would have wanted.  He was a protector and sacrificed his life so the rest of ... (click for more)

Roy Exum: What 17 Pills Did To Me

Ah, step into my parlor of first-hand wisdom because, in the School of Hard Knocks, there are priceless lessons that you should know before it becomes your turn to dance. Never in my life have I ever had any back problems but, in early December, I came down with what is called sciatica and I have been a miserable man ever since. There are two big nerves that sprout out of the ... (click for more)
