Demonstrators Protest TVA "Irresponsibility"

Monday, January 19, 2009

Demonstrators said they would be holding "non-violent demonstrations against the Tennessee Valley Authority's irresponsibility (its recent disasters and the whole concept of 'clean coal') on Monday in Chattanooga, Nashville, Johnson City and Knoxville.

Amanda Cagle said the picketing was to begin at noon "on the birthday of Martin Luther King Jr. and one day before the inauguration of Barack Obama."

She said, "In the past three weeks, TVA has dumped toxic waste into the Emory and Clinch Rivers, the Ocoee River, and Widows Creek. Explanations and cleanup have been minimal and pathetic. Over 470 mountains have been destroyed by mountaintop removal coal mining, of which TVA is the biggest customer.

"The public demands accountability and change. It's time for TVA to clean up their mess and their act. No more land and life destroyed in the name of cheap energy. No more dangerous sludge dams. No more energy from Mountaintop Removal coal. We demand support for clean, renewable energy - now."

The demonstration in Chattanooga was to be at the TVA headquarters at 1101 Market St. by Chattanooga Earth First and concerned citizens.

We Are Blessed To Have Ron Littlefield As Our Mayor

Chattanooga is blessed beyond measure to have Ron Littlefield as our mayor.  It is a total travesty our city has had to endure the long frivolous battle with absolutely  no foundation other than disagreement with policy issues.  It has always been a vendetta directed personally at Mayor Littlefield which, if the "interveners" decide to appeal, will be a proven fact.   ... Roy Exum: The Sadness Of The Recall

Judge Jeff Hollingsworth, his eagle eyes zeroed on the U.S. Constitution and the laws that have been put into place since it was adopted in 1787, ended the recall of Chattanooga Mayor Ron Littlefield Friday afternoon, but the pall of sadness that the effort cast over the city will last for a lot longer. If “time is money,” the whole deal cost us millions of dollars and even more ... (click for more)
