Girls Inc. Celebrates Girls & Women In Sports Day Feb. 7

Tuesday, January 27, 2009

Girls Inc. will lead a hike Saturday, Feb. 7, at Guild Trail on Lookout Mountain to celebrate National Girls & Women in Sports Day.

Meeting at 10 a.m., girls and a participating female parent, guardian or mentor will enjoy the outdoors and promote the importance of physical activity. After the hike, girls will participate in a scavenger hunt with a prize for the winner. The Girls Inc. celebration is expected to end around noon.

Guild Trail is a wide and relatively flat trail that should be an enjoyable walk for people of all ages and fitness levels, officials said.

All participants should bring a sack lunch and wear long pants and hiking or athletic shoes. Free parking is available at Ruby Falls. The hike begins promptly at 10 a.m., so participants should arrive a few minutes early.

Make a reservation by Feb. 4 to Tracy Windeknecht, manager of special programs, at twindeknecht@girlsincofchatt.org or by calling 624-4757.

National Women & Girls in Sports Day is organized by members of the National Girls & Women in Sports Coalition. Since 1987, the day has been celebrated each year by events in all 50 states. Founded in honor of Olympic volleyball player, Flo Hyman, the annual event is held in recognition of her athletic abilities and tireless work to advance the cause of women and athletics.
