BWSC Receives ASLA Awards For Park Projects

Tuesday, October 20, 2009

The Tennessee chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architects presented two awards to Barge Waggoner Sumner and Cannon, Inc., at the chapter’s annual conference on Oct. 8, in Nashville.

The Summit of Softball Complex in Chattanooga received the Honor Award in the category of the Built Environment: Parks and Recreation, while the Cherokee Removal Memorial Park in Meigs County received the Merit Award in the Historical or Cultural category.

These annual awards, judged by fellow Landscape Architects, are an effort to recognize excellence in landscape architecture and environmental design, with the call for entries going out to landscape architects across the state.

BWSC received two out of eight awards presented at the meeting, with entries judged by ASLA’s Louisville, Ky., chapter.

The Summit of Softball Complex, designed to give Chattanooga a competitive advantage in attracting major softball tournaments to the area, is an 80-acre tournament softball facility that consists of eight laser-graded, adult softball fields, extensive landscaping and custom site furnishings. The complex was designed by BWSC’s Chattanooga office and Chattanooga-based Neuhoff Taylor Architects.

The Cherokee Removal Memorial Park, funded in part by TDOT Enhancement funds, is a park designed to memorialize the beginning point of the Cherokee removal (Trail of Tears). Native materials and plantings were used in the park while efforts were made to preserve old growth present on and around the property.

Interpretive features, a memorial walking trail, a visitor’s center, and parking were all part of the design. BWSC’s Chattanooga office and Chattanooga-based Derthick, Henley & Wilkerson Architects were responsible for the design of the park.

ASLA is the national professional association for landscape architects, with 17,000 members in 48 professional chapters and 68 student chapters.

The Tennessee chapter’s annual conference focused on “Growing a Deeper Knowledge” with a goal to take part in building affordable quality communities.

Barge Waggoner Sumner & Cannon is an engineering, architecture, planning, landscape architecture, and surveying firm with offices located in Tennessee, Alabama, and Ohio.

Celebrating more than 50 years of service, BWSC is among the top 225 engineering and design firms in the United States.
