U.S. Senators Saxby Chambliss and Johnny Isakson Monday announced that the Gordon-Lee Mansion in Chickamauga will receive a $25,000 grant from the Appalachian Regional Commission.
The funds will be used to convert the historic Gordon-Lee Mansion, which was built in 1847 and served as General Rosecrans’ headquarters during the Civil War, into a visitor center to promote Chickamauga region’s history and attractions.
“The renovations to the Gordon-Lee Mansion will celebrate the heritage and culture of the unique Chickamauga region and will help attract tourism in the area,” said Senator Chambliss.
“I am honored to assist Georgians in their efforts to make our communities better places to live.”
“As the only structure that was used during the Battle of Chickamauga in the Civil War and survived it, the Gordon-Lee Mansion is a truly historic landmark for the city,” said Senator Isakson. “I am pleased that the ARC is supporting the local efforts to help turn it into a visitors center to promote the region.”
In addition to the Appalachian Regional Commission funds, the city of Chickamauga has committed $25,000 in local funds, bringing the total final project funding to $50,000.
The Appalachian Regional Commission is a federal-state partnership that works with the people of Appalachia to create opportunities for self-sustaining economic development and improved quality of life.
