Franklin D. Barnes, 69, of Signal Mountain, died on Sunday, November 1, 2009 with his family by his side, following a seven-year battle with cancer.
He was born on January 25, 1940 in Sherwood, Tn., and later moved with his family to Chattanooga. He was retired after 45 years as a self-employed carpet installer.
Known as "Bird" to his many family and friends, he loved to fish, tend to his lawn and garden, and spend time with his large family. He always had a smile on his face, laughter to share, and a twinkle in his eyes.
All who knew him would agree that he was a kind and generous man that made a friend of everyone he met.
He was preceded in death by his parents Tom and Sarah Barnes; grandparents, Alice and Mark Pack and Thomas and Jeannie Barnes.
He is survived by his loving wife of 45 years, Ruby; four daughters, Tonya Cornelison (Geno), Donna Stull, DeeAnn Eslinger (Gary) and Nikkie Barnes; four sons, Russell Gifford, Paul Gifford, Billy Gifford (Carmen) and Steve Barnes (Dee Dee); 14 grandchildren, P.J. Gifford, Chad Gifford, Meagin Harrison, Amanda Barnes, Ashley Stull, Harold Gage, Misty Gifford, Stephanie Barnes, Zachary Stull, Jacob Barnes, A.J.. Barnes, Austin Dykes, Franklin Gifford and Ginnie Gifford; five great-grandchildren, Adaison Gifford, Aidan Gifford, Emily Harrison, Dylan Leffew and Hanley Bell; and a very special family member he loved as a son, Mark Stull; two brothers, William and Butch Barnes; six sisters, Judy Hill, Margaret Barnes, Wanda Ruth, Diane Murphy, Darlene McGan and Charlsie Haley; many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 4, at the East Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home with Pastor Ronnie Dotson and Pastor Kenneth Haley officiating. Graveside services will be held at 2:30 p.m. CDT, on Wednesday, at Mountainview Cemetery in Sherwood, Tn.
Pallbearers will be Allen Barnes, Harold Gage, Zach Stull, T.J. Gifford, Larry Foster, and Spencer Smith.
The family will receive friends from 3-8 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 3, and from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. on Wednesday, at the funeral home.
