Graduation Summit Set Wednesday By County Schools

The Hamilton County Schools will sponsor a community-wide graduation summit Wednesday at First Baptist Church downtown from 8:30-3:30.

The summit, Expectation: Graduation ~ Dropouts are everyone’s business, seeks to engage all stakeholders in the community in an action plan to help students succeed from Pre-K through high school graduation, officials said.

The agenda is as follows:

Dr. Scales will welcome everyone – powerpoint on the cost of dropouts
State Senator Andy Berke – keynote speaker
Panels – students (dropouts and existing) and principals (K-12 sampling)
Ready by 21 discussion – this is a non-profit group from Washington, D.

C., that has chosen Hamilton County as one of its community sites (Hamilton County Schools applied and were chosen). They are focused on helping communities identify the ways and resources that can help students become ready for life, college, work by age 21
Breakout sessions – the participants will choose a breakout session to participate in based on interest
Debriefing – participants will discuss ideas and solutions to the problems and community engagement. Ready by 21 will facilitate and help HCDE to formulate an action plan from the input.


ACT-SO Orientation Is Saturday

The next orientation for ACT-SO will happen at Center for the Arts, 1301 Dallas Road, on Saturday.   African American youth between the ages of 12-18 years, potential judges, volunteers and all interested parties are invited to the orientation at 10:30 a.m.   ACT-SO is an acronym for Afro-Academic, Cultural, Technological and Scientific Olympics.  First place ... Man Tells Police He Just Murdered His Wife

An Chattanooga man told police Monday night that he had just murdered his wife.  Police said Robert Lee Hardnett, 50. showed up at the County Jail to turn himself in at 8:40 p.m. He said his wife's body could be found at his place of employment, Power Supply Company, 1907 Daisy St.   Officers responded to that address and found the body of 34-year-old Elizabeth ... Red Bank Commissioners Choose Kenneth Welch To Replace Greg Jones; Jeno Won't Run Again

The four remaining members of the Red Bank Commission held a special called meeting on Tuesday and chose Kenneth Welch as the replacement for Vice Mayor Greg Jones, who moved to Alaska.
