Exercise is beneficial to everyone for both physical and psychological reasons, but this may be difficult to achieve for those who are disabled, according to Dr. Zubin Guo, professor of anthropology at UTC, in an address at a recent meeting of the Signal Mountain Lions Club.

Dr Guo has spent many years working with Tai Chi Chuan and has developed a program of seated Tai Chi Chuan which is gaining in popularity. The exercise provided by Tai Chi Chuan for those in wheel chairs gives not only physical and psychological assistance, it also builds a good feeling of accomplishment and confidence.

Dr. Guo took his program to China in 2007 where hundreds participated in his programs. Then in 2008 he returned to China for the Paralympica Festival where hundreds again participated. With the help of slides taken in China, he demonstrated the way in which the wheelchair-bound can have fun while enhancing their health.

Dr. Guo was introduced by Jim Wade, former president. Wade also was honored at the meeting by recognition that he received a rare award at the recent District 12-0 Fall Conference, the President's Excellance Award for his work as president of the Signal Mountain Lions Club last year.

The speaker for the Tuesday, Nov. 24, 6:30 p.m. meeting at Mountain Arts Community Center will be Dr. Greg Dingwall, Lions District 12-0 Governor.

Thoughts On The Mathews Sentencing

It is not by coincidence I haven’t submitted an opinion piece in some time to the Chattanoogan.  The topics I cover are generally vitriolic in regards to local political decisions and their makers regarding public safety and I do not wish to associate my name with more noble subjects such as that of the heroic death and cowardly murder of Chattanooga Police Sergeant Tim Chapin, ... Thank You, Judge Mattice And Chattanooga

I would like to thank Judge Mattice for handing down a 30.5 year sentence for Kathleen Mathews.  Obviously, no amount of jail time, fines, or lashings can bring back Tim Chapin.   A 30-year sentence will, however, make the world just a little safer.  That's what Sgt. Chapin would have wanted.  He was a protector and sacrificed his life so the rest of ... (click for more)
