Covenant Soccer Qualifies For NCCAA National Soccer Tournament

Saturday, November 21, 2009

The Covenant men's soccer team qualified for the NCCAA national tournament in Kissimmee, Fla., with a 2-0 win over Oakland City at Mayfield, Ky., on Saturday.

The national tournament is set for early December.

The Scots first had to fend off King College on Friday. Covenant had beaten King 3-1 on homecoming earlier in the year.

With King seeking to avenge the loss, the Scots knew they needed to set the tone early, and they did just that as freshman Colby Robbins scored within the first fifteen minutes of the opening half. A Julian Allgeier free kick found forward Brian Stair's head, and the junior's deft flick found Robbins wide open at the far post.

The midfielder made no mistake in slotting the ball home, and Covenant was up 1-0 early. The score would remain this way throughout the first half and much of the second before King tied the game off a well-struck Raul Laparra goal. Around ten minutes later Covenant found themselves on the verge of taking the lead again, though, as King was called for a high-kick foul in the box. The result was an indirect free kick from close range, and Covenant's Robbins smashed home the go ahead goal, his second of the game. As the final minutes ticked away, Covenant victory seemed imminent, but a penalty called in the box on defender Hunt Davidson lead to a Jessus Ebanks penalty kick goal leveling the game at 2-2, and with only a few seconds remaining, the game was destined for overtime.

Covenant handled the situation well, keeping their composure and scoring in the first few minutes of golden goal overtime off a Julian Allgeier shot. Freshman Colby Robbins assisted the goal with a well-played ball that put Allgeier through on goal, and the leading scorer made short work of the King defenders before slotting home the game winner.

The Covenant players mobbed him in celebration as the Scots claimed the 3-2 overtime victory.

Thoughts On The Mathews Sentencing

It is not by coincidence I haven’t submitted an opinion piece in some time to the Chattanoogan.  The topics I cover are generally vitriolic in regards to local political decisions and their makers regarding public safety and I do not wish to associate my name with more noble subjects such as that of the heroic death and cowardly murder of Chattanooga Police Sergeant Tim Chapin, ... A Good School Takes Involvement - And Response

As I have read the articles concerning Normal Park School I can’t keep from thinking when our children started to school in the 1960‘s. The two elementary schools in the city that were considered tops were Barger and Woodmore. We did not live in the zone for either school so we looked for a house to buy that was zoned for Woodmore.   We found ... (click for more)
