Birding Banding

Saturday, November 21, 2009 - by Riverwalk Birding Club

Saturday morning from 8 am to noon , UTC's Dr. David Aborn conducted a bird banding class at Greenway Farm.

First he set up 7 nets in the underbrush to trap the birds

Very soon a Blue Jay was tangled in the net

Following that a Hermit Thrush was also captured.

Later the group watched Dr. Aborn removed the birds very carefully

The birds were placed in net bags and returned to the banding station where a tag was applied to the right legs

Then each bird was measured and weighed.

... and all data recorded ,then the bird was released unharmed.

All unharmed except Dr. Aborn who had a very large bite from a male Cardinal before it was released

The Hermit Thrush that was captured had a band on its leg, Dr. Aborn's record book revealed that he had banded this same bird 5 years ago at Greenway Farm, so all data was recorded and it was released again

This was clear proof that these birds migrate great distances and return to the same locations again. In fact Dr. Aborn had captured the same Wren 10 different times. Several TOS and RWBC bird club members were enjoying the bird banding

Dr. Aborn released the last of the first batch

... and the group returned to check the nets once again.

Many very dedicated people like Dr. Aborn spend many hours collecting data that all bird lovers enjoy, if you are not a birder we recommend it as a very relaxing way to spend a lot of enjoyable time.

Thoughts On The Mathews Sentencing

It is not by coincidence I haven’t submitted an opinion piece in some time to the Chattanoogan.  The topics I cover are generally vitriolic in regards to local political decisions and their makers regarding public safety and I do not wish to associate my name with more noble subjects such as that of the heroic death and cowardly murder of Chattanooga Police Sergeant Tim Chapin, ... A Good School Takes Involvement - And Response

As I have read the articles concerning Normal Park School I can’t keep from thinking when our children started to school in the 1960‘s. The two elementary schools in the city that were considered tops were Barger and Woodmore. We did not live in the zone for either school so we looked for a house to buy that was zoned for Woodmore.   We found ... (click for more)
