J.C. “Dicky” Smith, 83, died, surrounded by his loving family, on Saturday, Nov. 21, 2009.

Dicky lived most of his life in South Pittsburg. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy serving in World War II on the USS Intrepid.

Dicky was born in Sewanee, Tn., to the late Arthur Wesley Smith and Flossee May Long Smith. He was also preceded in death by one sister, Edna Perry of Winchester, Tn.

Dicky was a member of the Richard City Church of Christ. He was a retired builder, taking pride in the building of such landmarks as the Beene Pearson Library, Citizens State Bank, the former First National Bank, as well as other commercial buildings and homes throughout the Tennessee area.

Dicky loved spending time outdoors, along with the company of his family.

He is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Ellan Smith of South Pittsburg; one daughter, Linda Smith Hedrick (Jim) of South Pittsburg; three sons, Gary Smith (Deborah) of Signal Mountain; Daniel Smith (Angie) of East Ridge; and Douglas Smith (Donna) of South Pittsburg; nine grandchildren, Wesley Stone (Glenna) of South Pittsburg; Matt Stone of South Pittsburg, Byron Smith (Jessica) of Mobile, Al.; Heath Smith (Jessica) of Signal Mountain; Ryan and Alex Smith of Signal Mountain; Erica and Gray Smith of East Ridge; Heather Smith of South Pittsburg; eight great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends on Sunday, Nov. 21, from 5-9 p.m. CDT, at Rogers Funeral Home in South Pittsburg.

Man Tells Police He Just Murdered His Wife
