Boyd-Buchanan School is proud to announce Administrator Mary Helen
Wood receiving the distinguished service honoree award from TSSAA.
A native of Oak Ridge, Tennessee, Mary Helen Wood has always had a
heart for students. She began teaching mathematics at Brainerd High
School in Chattanooga upon graduating
in 1964 from David Lipscomb College. Mrs. Wood moved to Boyd-Buchanan
School as a teacher of mathematics in 1978, eventually teaching a
variety of grades and courses. In
1989 she became secondary school principal and curriculum coordinator
for grades K-12 and in 1992 received her masters degree in education
from the University of Tennessee.
Presently, she serves as vice president of Boyd-Buchanan School.
Mrs. Wood is a peer review facilitator for the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools and is a member of the National Association of Secondary School Principals, the Tennessee
Association of Independent Schools, and the National Council of
Teachers of Mathematics.
During her tenure as principal, Boyd-Buchanan School has grown
academically, athletically, and spiritually. Numerous AP and advanced
courses in a variety of disciplines were added to strengthen academic rigor; the athletic program grew and
developed with the addition of boys and girls soccer and cross-country
as well as the reestablishment of volleyball and golf. Under her administration, Boyd-Buchanan has advanced to the state finals in many of its sports and has captured state titles in football, basketball, and tennis. The graduation rate for athletes at Boyd-Buchanan School is 100%. The Secondary School grew spiritually by adding a campus minister and developing an
active international and local ministry.
Mrs. Wood and her husband, Jim, are the parents of two sons, Matthew
and Ethan, and they have six grandchildren.
