The Lee University Wind Ensemble will perform a concert on Dec. 1 in the Conn Center on the Lee University campus at 7:30 p.m. This is the second concert of the year for the Wind Ensemble, under the direction of Dr. David Holsinger.
They will be performing a wide range of music, all from American composers. The concert will open with “Fanfare for the Common Man,” a 1942 piece by Aaron Copland. “Traffic,” the third movement of Symphony No. 3 by Ned Rorem, will be performed as well as “Daydream” by Timothy Mahr.
Because of his association with the United States Marine Band, over the years Dr. Holsinger has been able to obtain and perform several of John Philip Sousa’s uncirculated marches with the Lee Wind Ensemble. The December concert will feature Sousa’s “President Garfield’s Funeral March” from 1881.
“This is undoubtedly the most unique Sousa march we have revived,” said Dr. Holsinger. “It is classical. It is ‘Victorian.’ It is elegant. All accompanied by the sound of muffled drums in dirge time.”
The evening will also feature “Semper Fidelis March,” another work by Sousa, “Chorale and Toccata” by Jack Stamp as well as Dr. Holsinger’s “Partita Allegro.” The program will end with David Maslanka’s “Symphony in Two Movements.”
“Symphony in Two Movements is a marvelous work of heroic musical proportions. It is music that is at times deeply serene, joyfully unbridled and sternly sober in character. Definitely a work one will not soon forget,” said Dr. Holsinger.
The concert is free of charge and open to the public. For more information, contact the Lee University School of Music at 614-8240 or by email at music@leeuniversity.edu.
