Stand Up For Foster Kids

Tuesday, November 24, 2009

Each day children across our country are removed from their homes and placed in foster care due to abuse and neglect. These children are abused by the people who were supposed to love them the most —their parents. Child abuse is a societal problem with so many causes and responses that entire agencies, professions and organizations have been created to address it. Their efforts are valiant, but they are overwhelmed and understaffed. Funding is scarce, turnover chronic. Many of us often wonder what we can do to help.

One need not possess expertise to positively impact the lives and futures of our most vulnerable children. Opportunities abound for those wishing to make a difference. One such opportunity exists through Lookout Mountain Court Appointed Special Advocates.

CASA is the only volunteer organization that empowers everyday citizens as officers of the court. CASA volunteers typically handle just one or two cases at a time — and commit to staying on that case until the child is placed in a safe and loving permanent home. While caseworkers, attorneys and foster placements may come and go, CASA volunteers are the one constant that children need in order to thrive.

Imagine being whisked out of your home at the age of 5 carrying only your teddy bear (if you're lucky), separated from siblings, not knowing when or if you'll see them again. CASA volunteers become guardian angels for these children during a scary and turbulent time.

Are you ready to stand up for a child who needs you? Inquire today about the power you have to change a child's life. To become a CASA Volunteer, applicants need to complete 30 hours of CASA training which is offered at no charge. Volunteers must be 21 years old, must agree to at least a 1 year commitment on the case, must sign a confidentiality agreement, must participate in continuing education, and must successfully pass a criminal background check.
