Mocs Picked 4th In North Division Of SoCon

Thursday, November 05, 2009

College of Charleston and Western Carolina are the favorites to capture the Southern Conference’s divisional men’s basketball titles in 2009-10, according to a vote by the leagues head coaches. CofC junior guard Andrew Goudelock was also named the SoCon Preseason Player of the Year.

Western Carolina returns all five starters from a team that tied for the North Division Championship last season with an 11-9 mark in league play. The Catamounts earned 10 first-place votes and finished the balloting with 64 points. Appalachian State earned the remaining two first-place votes in the North Division and finished with 55 points. Samford (44) was chosen third while last season’s tournament champion, Chattanooga (39), was slotted fourth. Elon and UNC Greensboro tied for fifth place with 22 points apiece.

Behind eight first-place votes, College of Charleston was picked to win the South Division. The Cougars finished 15-5 in league play a season ago and advanced to the tournament championship before falling to the Mocs. Wofford picked up three first-place votes and finished second in the preseason balloting with 54 points. Davidson, which has won the South Division each of the past three years, earned the final first-place vote in the South Division and came in third with 48 points. The Citadel (36) finished fourth, followed by Furman (24) and Georgia Southern (21).

In addition to the preseason polls, the coaches selected an all-conference team. Goudelock, who ranked fourth in the league in scoring last season (16.7 ppg), was joined on the preseason team by backcourt mate Tony White, Jr. Western Carolina and Wofford also placed two student-athletes on the preseason all-conference team. The Catamounts were represented by Harouna Mutombo, last season’s Freshman of the Year, and Brandon Giles. Noah Dahlman and Junior Salters earned preseason plaudits for the Terriers. Other members of the preseason team included Will Archambault (Davidson), Kellen Brand (Appalachian State), Willie Powers (Georgia Southern) and Cameron Wells (The Citadel).

The regular season opens Friday, Nov. 13, when nine teams hit the court. Eleven of the 12 SoCon teams will begin play over that weekend. The Southern Conference Tournament will be held March 5-8, 2010 in Charlotte.

Georgia Northwestern Falls To Crown 73-60

The Bobcats have exactly 18 days to re-shape their game plan for their first ever NJCAA post-season appearance. A shortened roster struck by injuries throughout the 2011-12 campaign left Georgia Northwestern with only seven uniformed players in the home stand finale Monday night at The R.A.C. versus Crown College (TN).  In their final home game, the Bobcats played an extremely ... Vince Dean Picks Up For Senate Race; Tommie Brown Headed For Contest With JoAnne Favors

Rep. Vince Dean has picked up papers to run for the Senate District 10 seat now held by Democrat Andy Berke. And Rep. Tommie Brown picked up papers to retain her District 28 seat. That sets up a clash with Rep. JoAnne Favors, who picked up for District 28 earlier. Under Republican redistricting, Rep. Favors wound up in the Brown district. Rep. Dean, a Republican from East ... Thank You, Judge Mattice And Chattanooga

I would like to thank Judge Mattice for handing down a 30.5 year sentence for Kathleen Mathews.  Obviously, no amount of jail time, fines, or lashings can bring back Tim Chapin.   A 30-year sentence will, however, make the world just a little safer.  That's what Sgt. Chapin would have wanted.  He was a protector and sacrificed his life so the rest of ... (click for more)

Roy Exum: What 17 Pills Did To Me

Ah, step into my parlor of first-hand wisdom because, in the School of Hard Knocks, there are priceless lessons that you should know before it becomes your turn to dance. Never in my life have I ever had any back problems but, in early December, I came down with what is called sciatica and I have been a miserable man ever since. There are two big nerves that sprout out of the ... (click for more)
