Edward Jackson III, 18, has been charged with criminal homicide in a slaying at a park off Amnicola Highway on Queens Drive. Jackson, of 1207 Crutchfield Street, is charged with killing Antonio Green and wounding Artie "June Bug" Watson late Thursday afternoon.
Watson, who is recovering after being shot twice, is charged with attempted aggravated robbery.
Police said in the affidavit of complaint they stopped Jackson in a black Monte Carlo after being told the driver had been involved in the shooting about a block away. A later police statement was that Jackson left the shooting scene on foot, while Darryl Williams, who had been with him at the park, got into his (Jackson's) car and it was stopped by police.
The later police statement said at 5:05 p.m. officers responded to 2112 Delano St. on a report of a man bleeding and who was possibly shot. Upon arrival, they found Jackson. Officers said he had not been shot, but had been assaulted and was bleeding from the head. He was transported to the hospital by ambulance.
Jackson said he had been approached by two black males, who went through his pockets trying to rob him.
Police said Watson drove himself and Green to Erlanger Hospital. The complaint said Green was dead by the time they arrived, with a gunshot wound to his upper right chest. The later police statement said he died at the hospital.
Watson told police he and Green got into an argument with Jackson at the park. He said Jackson pulled a black .25-caliber handgun and shot Green, then turned the gun on him. He said he wrestled the gun away from Jackson. He said he threw the gun out the window while on the way to Erlanger.
Police said they were advised that Jackson and Darryl Williams had gone to the park for a drug transaction when the pair tried to rob them. Williams said the robbers began beating Jackson.
Police said children were playing nearby at the time of the shooting.
Jackson is being held on $20,000 bond.
He is due in General Sessions Court next Friday.
