Veterans’ Day Event at John A. Patten Recreation Center
Thursday, Nov. 12, 6:30 p.m.
Program to commemorate veterans in the Lookout Valley community in conjunction with their monthly neighborhood Association meeting. For more information call Jim Long at 825-5955.

Recreation Center Thanksgiving Food Drives
Through Nov. 18
Brainerd, Glenwood, North Chattanooga, Sheila M. Jennings (Westside), and Tyner/East Brainerd.
Donations will go to the Chattanooga Food Bank.

New Hours of Operation for City Recreation Centers, as of Nov. 1:
Monday – Friday - 11:30 a.m.-8 p.m.
New hours for Brainerd and South Chattanooga Complexes:
Monday – Thursday 9 a.m.-8 p.m. Friday - 9 a.m.-6 p.m.
Saturday - 11 a.m.- 4 p.m.

Sports Activities:
NBA “FIT Challenge
Saturday, Nov. 14, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Brainerd Rec. Center
Basketball skills and fitness activities for boys and girls ages five–14. Winners in each age category qualify for regional competitions and the national event in Dallas, Tx., in 2010.

The recreation center Basketball Leagues offered this November - January:
Open (Boys and Girls) ages five and six, “Midgets”, ages seven-nine, “Pee Wee”, girl’s Pee Wee, seven-nine, girls 13 and under, girls 14-18, and boys 12 and under, 15 and under, and 18 and under. For more information call Richard West at 643-6055.

Recreation center staffs are asked to let Richard know what ages and teams they will be providing by Thursday, Nov. 12.

Tournaments have ended for Summit of Softball, Warner Park & Champions Club Tennis Complex. Next year’s seasons will begin in February 2010.

Outdoor Chattanooga and Related Activities:
Telephone briefing about Report on National Pedestrian Safety Monday, Nov. 9, at 11 a.m. Transportation for America (T4America) and the Surface Transportation Policy Partnership will hold a giant call-in to discuss the report, Dangerous by Design: Solving the Epidemic of Preventable Pedestrian Deaths (and Making Great Neighborhoods). Bike Chattanooga and Outdoor Chattanooga encourage people to call-in especially in lieu of the recent pedestrian fatalities on McCallie Avenue. Bike Polo Tuesday evening pickup games at 5:30 p.m. at Outdoor Chattanooga Center, no experience is necessary. Helmets are required. Call Minya James at 423 643-6884.

Beginner Hike to Mushroom Rock Sun. Nov. 15, at 12:30 p.m. on Signal Mountain. The Chattanooga Hiking Club and Outdoor Chattanooga easy beginner hike and introduction to geocaching. Therapeutic Recreation Services Program:
Chili’s Give-Back Night, Tuesday, Nov. 10, from 5-9 p.m. at Market Street Chili’s Restaurant. Chili’s will donate 10% of the evening’s dinner sales to the city’s Therapeutic Recreation Services Program. Present the flyer, eat lots, and keep the great programs going.

C.H.I.P.S Golf League Game, Thursday, Nov. 12, at Brown Acres Golf Course. Nine holes for $10. Benefits the USGA Program that makes golf accessible to folks who have disabilities. Call Elaine for exact times at 643-1345.

Sib Celebration, Saturday, Nov. 14, from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. at the Chattanooga Zoo. Annual Therapeutic Recreation Program event for the siblings of individuals with disabilities. This is geared to siblings ages eight to 13 and includes team building games, arts and crafts, food, and a chance to share and support each other. Siskin Children’s Institute co-sponsor. Arbor Day Celebrations Scheduled For March 2-3

Lookout Valley, Tn. recorded the first tornado on what would become a historic 2-day tornado outbreak, at 7:55am on April 27, 2011. An EF 2 tornado with winds up to 135mph, damaged buildings, uprooted hundreds of trees and left one dead. Lookout Valley continues to rebuild from that day. Mother Of Man Charged With Killing Sgt. Chapin Given Prison Sentence Of 30 Years, 6 Months

The mother of the man charged with killing Chattanooga Police Sgt. Tim Chapin was sentenced Monday to serve 30 years and six months in federal prison.  Judge Sandy Mattice said the sentence for Kathleen Mathews, 57-year-old mother of Jesse Mathews, as a packed courtroom watched.  Ray Mathews, 51-year-old father of Jesse Mathews, must serve 20 years and 10 months. ... I would like to thank Judge Mattice for handing down a 30.5 year sentence for Kathleen Mathews.  Obviously, no amount of jail time, fines, or lashings can bring back Tim Chapin.   A 30-year sentence will, however, make the world just a little safer.  That's what Sgt.
