2 Highway Workers Struck And Killed By I-75 In Anderson County

Monday, November 09, 2009

Two highway workers were struck and killed by Interstate 75 in Anderson County on Monday morning.

Transportation Commissioner Gerald Nicely said, “I speak for everyone here at the Tennessee Department of Transportation when I say our deepest sympathies are with the families, co-workers and friends of the two highway workers from Lu, Inc. who were struck and killed today along I-75 in Anderson County.

"Highway construction workers put their lives at risk every day to build and maintain our transportation system. Unfortunately, incidents like this are all too common.

"The death of these two men should serve as a reminder to all motorists of the importance of using the utmost caution when workers are present along the roadway.”

The two men were employees of Lu, Inc. of Kingston Springs, Tn. The men were working on cable barrier rail recently installed along I-75 near mile marker 121.

At this time, Interstate 75 Southbound is closed at mile marker 122 and traffic is being detoured onto Highway 61 and then onto Highway 25W (Clinton Highway). I-75 Northbound is reduced to one lane and at this time heavy traffic back-ups are present. Motorists are encouraged to seek alternate routes.

The Tennessee Highway Patrol is investigating the incident.

Thoughs On The Mathews Sentencing

It is not by coincidence I haven’t submitted an opinion piece in some time to the Chattanoogan.  The topics I cover are generally vitriolic in regards to local political decisions and their makers regarding public safety and I do not wish to associate my name with more noble subjects such as that of the heroic death and cowardly murder of Chattanooga Police Sergeant Tim Chapin, ... Thank You, Judge Mattice And Chattanooga

I would like to thank Judge Mattice for handing down a 30.5 year sentence for Kathleen Mathews.  Obviously, no amount of jail time, fines, or lashings can bring back Tim Chapin.   A 30-year sentence will, however, make the world just a little safer.  That's what Sgt. Chapin would have wanted.  He was a protector and sacrificed his life so the rest of ... (click for more)
