While travelling on I-75 south near Jellico on Sunday, I witnessed what
could have been a real tragedy. A pick-up pulling a huge RV lost
control and jack-knifed across the southbound lanes, swerving back and
forth and finally ended up against the guard rail. Amazingly,
considering the heavy Thanksgiving traffic, no one was injured as the
pick-up just avoided flipping over and did not collide with any other
car. However, the accident caused a huge back-up and delay for those
going south.
Since we are now entering the season when every other retiree in
Michigan and Ohio hooks up their RV to their pick-up and heads south
for the winter, I would ask TDOT and the Tennessee Legislature some
questions.
Can anyone with a regular drivers license pull a RV down the road
behind their pick-up or does it require a special license?
Does a pick-up pulling a RV have any special equipment or size requirements?
Does the same speed limit apply to trucks pulling RVs as passenger cars?
I have no problems with the self-contained RVs on the road, but those being pulled by pick-ups appear to be an accident waiting to happen.
