The East Ridge City Council on Thursday night voted 3-2 to install fixed and mobile speed enforcement cameras in the city.
It was a vote on second and final reading with the first vote happening 14 months ago.
Voting in favor were Mayor Mike Steele and City Council members Tom Card and Larry Sewell. Opposed were Council members Denny Manning and Brent Lambert.
Mayor Steele said there will not be any red light cameras. He said the city's speed problems are on throughways such as Belvoir Avenue. He said a delegation from Belvoir supported the speed camera idea.
The mayor said the income will go for safety programs and not in the general fund as the resolution was orginally written.
"We are not doing this to make a budget," Mayor Steele said.
He said the funds will go for such items as traffic calming devices, signage and driver's education programs at East Ridge High School.
The program was recommended by City Manager William Whitson.
The next step is for an RFP to be issued to companies who deal in speed enforcement such as those used by Red Bank and Chattanooga.
Those found to be speeding will be assessed a $50 charge. The speeding cases are to be reviewed by a city officer.
