A man charged with running over and killing a Unum employee on Wednesday morning told police he "had been drinking all night."
Officers said Jeremy Allen Lane "had a very strong odor of an intoxicant" when he was interviewed shortly after his vehicle struck 42-year-old Susan Wood as she tried to cross Fourth Street on her way to work.
Lane, 24, made a $180,000 bond at 2:30 a.m. after his parents came up with $18,000 in cash. Four bonding companies went together to make the high bond.
Lane earlier made a bond that was related to an old case he had picked up in Juvenile Court. He was released from the jail as an officer filled out charges of vehicular homicide, DUI and leaving the scene of an accident. He was taken back into custody and made the high bond.
Lane told police initially that he had been carjacked and that someone else was driving his red Nissan when Mrs. Wood was hit. However, police charged him after finding "inconsistencies" in his story."
Mrs. Wood was struck at 7:11 a.m. and died while in surgery about four hours later after suffering massive injuries.
Beverly Rhoden, a fellow Unum employee, said she heard a loud thump while she was also at Fourth Street. She said she then saw a red Nissan leaving the scene.
Mrs. Rhoden said she saw what she first thought was a pile of garbage in the road. Then she discovered that a woman had been hit.
Lane's criminal record includes DUI and speeding in 2004 and later cases of assault, speeding and driving on a revoked license.
Police said about 10 minutes after Mrs. Wood was hit, Lane called a dispatcher saying he had been carjacked. Interviewed by an officer on Manning Street in North Chattanooga, he was "incoherent" on when the alleged carjacking occurred.
He admitted to driving his Nissan from work just prior to when Mrs. Wood was hit.
The Nissan was located later in the morning and it had heavy front damage on the right side consistent with hitting a pedestrian.
Lane was observed by a store clerk walking back toward the place where he had allegedly been carjacked, police said.
Lane said no one else was in his vehicle when he was driving it.
Funeral services for Mrs. Wood will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Monday at the North Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home with Dr. David McNabb officiating. Burial will follow in Hamilton Memorial Gardens.
