Rep. Richard Floyd (R-Chattanooga) and members of the Signal Mountain City Council thanked the Tennessee Department of Transportation and others for quick action cleaning up a rock slide that occurred on Signal Mountain last week. The rock slide blocked Highway 127, the main thoroughfare on Signal Mountain, and the primary road used to access the mountain.
“I want to thank, on behalf of my constituents, the Tennessee Department of Transportation for their quick response to the rock slide on Signal Mountain,” said Rep. Floyd. “They sprang into action, and it was very much appreciated. Even in the inclement weather, they immediately began working very hard to clear the road. Again, I want to thank them for their prompt attention to this potentially tragic situation.”
The rock slide was one of several that have happened in the last month, mainly due to more rain than usual for the area and freezing temperatures.
Richard Floyd represents District 27 in the state House of Representatives.

One lane of Highway 127 up Signal Mountain collapsed on Wednesday, December 9th, creating what could have been a devastating emergency. However, no one was injured—and thanks to the help of many—the road repairs were made expeditiously and inconveniences to those who live on the mountain were minimal. The Town of Signal Mountain is grateful for the assistance of the following:
TDOT for its quick response, excellent communication, and professionalism throughout the process.
Thompson Engineering for engineering and oversight of the repair.
Wright Brothers Construction for executing the repair.
Hamilton County Highway Department, which despite winter weather, assisted in keeping the W and Roberts Mill Roads opened.
Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office for directing traffic at the W curves.
The City of Chattanooga for backup emergency response for the area of the Town below the repair.
Hamilton County Emergency Management and the 911 Emergency Communication District for coordinating emergency response backup for the mountain.
Walden’s Ridge Emergency Service and Dallas Bay Volunteer Fire Department for assistance with emergency calls.
Red Bank Fire Department for mutual aid response.
Signal Mountain Town Manager Honna Rogers, the Police and Fire Departments, and all Town employees, who worked hard to ensure the public safety and minimize inconvenience for Town residents.
Signal Mountain appreciates the generous support from its Hamilton County neighbors throughout this emergency. We appreciate the efforts of all those involved. We also look forward to new discussions with TDOT for a long-range plan for Highway 127 to ensure its safety in the future.
With sincere thanks,
The Signal Mountain Town Council
