County School Board Chairman Kenny Smith announced today that he will seek the Hamilton County District 8 seat being vacated by Curtis Adams.
“Over the last several months the support for me to run has been overwhelming,” said Mr. Smith at a press conference at the County Courthouse. “I have been involved in public service all my life and I see this as another transition where I can more effectively help the citizens of this great community.” Mr. Smith said education and job creation are his top priorities in seeking office. He has been instrumental in working to improve public education and a force behind job training for many years.
He said, “My experience on the school board and working in the areas of job training for our younger citizens has allowed me to understand what is necessary to educate the next generation workforce.
“In order for us to remain economically competitive, we must lay the groundwork for good jobs that allow families to enjoy the quality of life they deserve.”
Mr. Smith also said that safety in neighborhoods is top on his list, as well. “With the downturn in the economy we are seeing an increase in crime. I will work with our law enforcement agencies to make sure we are doing all we can to keep our neighborhoods safe.
“I want to make sure all citizens and particularly our seniors have the security they deserve.”
Mr. Smith has served on the Hamilton County School Board for three and a half years and is in his third term as chairman. He is also a member of the board of directors of the United Way, Chattanooga State Technical Community College and was appointed by Governor Phil Bredesen to serve on the State Workforce Development Board.
Mr. Smith has been married to his wife, Sammye, for 35 years and they have two sons and two grandchildren. He is a City High School graduate and received a bachelor’s degree from the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga.
