Sweet Peppers Deli, located at 407 Broad St., was quite busy when we went for a Saturday afternoon lunch.

For a deli, Sweet Peppers has quite a large menu with some delicious items. They offer everything from appetizers to salads, soup, potatoes, paninis, wraps and sandwiches. Wayne, who does not care for delis, liked this place!

The restaurant space is very nice and the people working there were quite friendly and helpful. As you enter you are facing a glass deli-counter full of wonderful looking desserts. You order at the counter, are given a number, then your food is delivered to you along with full table service.

I had a coupon for a free Chips n’ Rotel so we started with that – and were very surprised when they delivered our appetizer (the Rotel) prior to our food! How nice to have good timing even in a deli and it was just as good as the Rotel I make at home.

Even though the menu offered homemade chili, I decided to go with the Crawfish Bisque ($2.59 cup; $4.99 bowl). This was some of the best Crawfish Bisque I have ever eaten. It was rich and creamy with plenty of crawfish. I would definitely go back just for the bisque. They also offered me a sample of Chicken Noodle Soup which was delicious - nothing like you buy in a can. It was a cream-based soup, rather than the thin broth/water base.

To go with my soup I chose Chicken Salad on Deli Greens. More than I could eat (I wanted to save room for dessert)! The Chicken Salad is made with white meat chicken, eggs, red seedless grapes and chopped pecans, accompanied by cucumbers and tomatoes ($6.89). The Chicken Salad was quite good, not overly mayonnaise.

Wayne ordered a sandwich referred to as The Blitz; layers of roast beef, turkey and ham topped with Jalapeno Pepper cheese ($5.99). Let me tell you, this sandwich was huge! One-half would be a normal sized sandwich. Sandwiches are served with a pickle and your choice of potato chips, cole slaw, potato salad, pasta salad or mixed fruit. There was plenty of meat on the sandwich and he felt it was definitely worth the price.

The only thing that gave us the slightest disappointment was the dessert. We both chose the Raspberry Eruption ($3.99). It was a good dessert, but it wasn’t what I have become accustomed to as an “eruption”. I think of “eruption” as this gooey sauce coming from the top, but that wasn’t a part of it. Basically it is simply a large piece of cheesecake.

Some of the items sounded really interesting, such as The Bulldog sandwich (roast beef, kielbasa, jalapeno pepper cheese, and BBQ sauce; $5.99) and the Loaded Tater (ham, turkey, bacon, cheddar and monterrey Jack cheeses, green onions, black olives, butter and sour cream; $6.89).

Sweet Peppers Deli is a nice (and tasty) addition to the downtown area. They also have a lite menu, as well as a kids menu.

Hours for Sweet Peppers Deli are Sunday through Thursday from 10:30 a.m. until 9 p.m. and on Friday and Saturday until 10 p.m.

Thoughts On The Mathews Sentencing

It is not by coincidence I haven’t submitted an opinion piece in some time to the Chattanoogan.  The topics I cover are generally vitriolic in regards to local political decisions and their makers regarding public safety and I do not wish to associate my name with more noble subjects such as that of the heroic death and cowardly murder of Chattanooga Police Sergeant Tim Chapin, ... A Good School Takes Involvement - And Response

As I have read the articles concerning Normal Park School I can’t keep from thinking when our children started to school in the 1960‘s. The two elementary schools in the city that were considered tops were Barger and Woodmore. We did not live in the zone for either school so we looked for a house to buy that was zoned for Woodmore.   We found ... (click for more)
