Chattanooga Police said Sunday night that several areas in the city are flooding and a number of roadways have been closed.
Barricades are up and police are asking citizens to abide by these barricades.
The Chattanooga Chapter of the American Red Cross was taking in apartment evacuees because of the flooding. Officials said the unit was assisting in the evacuation of 15-20 families and placing them in a safer location. They are from the Battlewood Apartments at 1830 Fant Dr. in Fort Oglethorpe.
The entire first floor of the apartments was flooded around 5:30 p.m.
"We are fortunate to have some very experienced disaster volunteers willing to drop everything at a moment's notice to help those in need," said Barbara Alexander, executive director of the Greater Chattanooga Area American Red Cross. "We were called to the scene to assist with emergency temporary shelter at the Fort Oglethorpe Constitution Hall until safer housing is made available."
Several counties continue to face heavy flooding as strong storms persist in the area. "The Red Cross is thankful to have the resources and volunteers to assist in a community wide effort to safe guard our local residents in their time of need." said Brad Waye of the Chattanooga area Red Cross.
Red Cross assistance is free of charge and supported through the generosity of the American people. Donations to help those in need are being accepted at the local chapter - visit our website at www.chattanoogaredcross.org/donate.
