Southern History in Movies Series February 2, 9, and 16

The Chattanooga History Center will offer a three-weeks discussion series, "Southern History in Movies," at 7:00pm on Tuesdays, February 2, 9 and 16.

The series, facilitated by the History Center’s Executive Director and Historian, Dr. Daryl Black, will be held at the Center’s temporary location, 615 Lindsay Street, Suite 100. The program is free to the public, and pre-registration is required by February 1st.

In this series, we will look at three movies which have impacted our perception of our region. Participants will watch the movies on their own, and gather for informal discussions that are always interesting and lots of fun.

The movies are:

* February 2
"Davy Crockett, King of the Wild Frontier" (1955). Produced by Walt Disney, directed by Norman Foster, and starring Fess Parker.

*February 9
"To Kill A Mockingbird" (1962). Directed by Robert Mulligan, and starring Gregory Peck.

* February 16
"White Lightning" (1973). Directed by Joseph Sargent and starring Burt Reynolds.

Meeting Set On Hixson Treasures From The Past Exhibit

A meeting has been set for Feb. 11 to discuss a "Hixson Treasures from the Past" exhibit. It will be at the North River Civic Center, 1009 Executive Dr., on Saturday at 10 a.m. Persons interested in helping with the exhibit are asked to attend. 1940 Ford Truck Sells For Record $71,500 At Auction

An originally restored two-toned, tan and black 1940 Ford truck sold at a Barret-Jackson auction this week for a record $71,500. The truck originally sold for a little more than $600 in 1940. Prosecutors Asking Maximum Sentence For "Evil" Mother Of Jesse Mathews

Prosecutors are asking that the mother of the man charged with killing Chattanooga Police Sgt. Tim Chapin be given the maximum possible sentence, calling Kathleen Mathews an evil manipulator who encouraged Jesse Mathews' criminal endeavors. Mark Phillips Was Victim In Fatal Hixson Pike Wreck

Mark Phillips, 54, was the victim in a fatal Hixson Pike wreck on Saturday afternoon. Police said the driver of the Ford F150 that went out of control and struck the Phillips vehicle was 68-year-old Warren Elliott. We Are Blessed To Have Ron Littlefield As Our Mayor - And Response (2)
