Chattanooga firefighters battled a blaze at the Woodlawn Apartments on Wednesday evening.
Firefighters responded to the fire at 2300 Wilson St. shortly after 7 p.m.
Capt. Carlos Hampton with Engine 4 said he observed a resident re-enter Apartment 4M where the fire was located, carrying a portable fire extinguisher. Firefighters with Engine 4 quickly went into the apartment and got the resident out to safety.
Capt. Hampton said heavy smoke was showing from an apartment on the second floor when the first firefighters arrived on the scene. The firefighters located the fire in the kitchen and quickly extinguished the blaze. The fire damage was contained to the kitchen, but there was smoke and water damage to the rest of the apartment.
Paramedics with Hamilton County EMS treated the resident who went back into the burning apartment for minor smoke inhalation, but the victim was not transported to a hospital.
The cause of the fire appears to be accidental in nature. An estimate on the dollar loss was not available. Chattanooga Police also provided assistance on the scene.
