KNOXVILLE -- No. 21 Vanderbilt upset No. 14 Tennessee, 85-76, in an SEC men's basketball game here Wednesday night.

Jermaine Beal led Vanderbilt with 25 points. The Commodores won their 10th straight.

The Commodores moved to 16-3 overall and 5-0 in the SEC. Tennessee dropped to 15-4 and 3-2.

TENNESSEE HEAD COACH Bruce Pearl:

"We can live with scoring 76 points. We can live with shooting 44 percent - even shooting 30 percent from 3. We can live with all of those numbers, but we cannot live with and we cannot win when we give up 51 percent shooting. That's the common denominator in all of our losses.

"While we may have struggled some offensively, it affected our defense. In our transition defense we didn't get back and we gave up some easy baskets. At one point in the second half we lost the momentum. The technical foul on J.P. Prince's dunk was - at that point - a momentum shifter. Vanderbilt's experience obviously took over in crucial situations in the game. They made a bunch of shots and we had a couple of empty possessions, and that was the difference in the game.

"I think J.P. really stepped up. He had positive energy and an inner confidence. J.P. is one of our best players now. He was always a very effective player and one of the important pieces to our puzzle, but now he is one of our best players and he's playing like it. He's always been a stat sheet stuff. He looks at the roster right now, and he looks around and he says, `I better step up.' Bobby Maze is the same way. He played real hard tonight. I don't think Bobby took a possession off.

"I thought Wayne Chism played with some courage. Obviously, offensively he was not as effective. It was hard to get him the ball inside. Vanderbilt did a good job of extending defensively. We had certain lineups out there that could not move the ball at times.

"I thought Jermaine Beal, Brad Tinsley and John Jenkins were the three guys that could shoot it, and those were the three guys that made them for them tonight. Beal was special. Part of our success against Vanderbilt in the past was that we had got the better of him. Everybody talks about A.J. Ogilvy, and whether he's a factor, but, in my mind, Beal has always been the guy that has made the team go. If you look at his numbers the last couple of years versus our point guard, we've done well. Tonight he was dominant, and he was focused.

"We had a lot of foul trouble. Kenny Hall had four fouls and Scotty Hopson had four fouls early in the second half. We had the lead, but it put us in the situation where we had to go to the bench. Vanderbilt does a good job of creating contact. We were in the bonus in both halves in five minutes. You have to shoot better from the foul line to win a close game. Obviously our free throw shooting was not good. Wayne Chism hadn't been able to shoot the ball until yesterday. He had been off his feet until yesterday. It affected his offense, but it didn't affect his effort or his ability to rebound."

VANDERBILT HEAD COACH KEVIN STALLINGS:

"It was a hard-fought game - a very good game. I thought both teams played well. Prince was great and Hopson was great. As we have been able to do thus far in league play, we caused some foul problems. We had some of our own, but we were able to cause foul trouble and I thought that paid some dividends down the stretch of the game.

"I thought maybe our biggest basket of the night was when they got up six points, and Jermaine (Beal) came down from 14 feet or so and hit a jumper and I called time-out. If we do not score there, they are on a run and we have got some issues perhaps.

"It was a great game to win - a great second half by our team. I thought Beal was absolutely spectacular in the second half and I am really proud of him. That was a terrific game for him.

"There are certain things you have to do against Tennessee, and one of them is take care of the ball. We turned it over more than they did, but 14 turnovers - that is a good number against them. They (usually) force more than that.

"It was a good game. Both teams played really hard and we feel fortunate to win."

Post-Game Notes - Vols vs. Vanderbilt (Jan. 27, 2010)

•The Vols (15-4, 3-2 SEC) suffered their first loss in 11 home games at Thompson-Boling Arena. They had won four consecutive games against teams from the SEC East.

•J.P. Prince led UT with 22 points, one shy of his career high. It was the first time this season he has scored 20 or more points. He made three 3-pointers in a game for the first time in his career.

•Maze had 7 assists to only 1 turnover, improving his assist-to-turnover ratio to 2.95.

•Wayne Chism had a season-high 16 rebounds to go along with 8 points. Wednesday marked the 50th time Chism has led the Vols in rebounds. Chism had a season-high 5 blocks.

•Tennessee leads the all-time series 108-68 and 66-17 in games played in Knoxville.

•Vanderbilt hit 8-of-14 3-pointers (57.1 percent), including 5-of-7 (71.4 percent) in the second half.

•Vanderbilt made 21-of-29 free throws (72.4 percent), while the Vols shot 14-of-24 (58.3 percent).

•Chism ended his consecutive made free throw streak at 18 when he missed his first free throw of the night with 3:41 left in the first half. He finished 4-of-8 from the line.
