My friend, Vivian, and I decided to stop by GollyWhopper’s Sandwich Shoppe at 6337 East Brainerd Road for a quick lunch as I had passed by several times and noticed a sign announcing they now had a salad bar.

The salad bar is $6.99. Everything was fresh, and it appeared to be kept up and cleaned while we were there. Maybe it’s just me, but I thought the price might be a bit steep for just salad. Yes, it is “all you can eat”, but there is nothing such as potato salad, tuna salad, etc. I was impressed with the good quality lettuces (I hate salad bars that only provide iceberg and they didn’t have that at all, which to me is good). They did have a pasta salad. I would have considered $4.99 to be a great price.

I also purchased a soup to go with my salad. If you buy it as a side to the salad, it is $1.99. On the day we were there, they offered two soups and the one I chose was Collard Greens with White Beans. That sounded a bit out of the ordinary, so I went for it. I was glad I did because it was really delicious. Basically it was a bowl of collard greens with white beans tossed in, and a lot of juice. I thoroughly enjoyed it and would definitely order it again. The perfect soup for a country girl!

Vivian and I both agreed the salad bar was good, and we would certainly go back, but would like it better if either more items were added, or the price were a bit less for the current selections.

GollyWhoppers serves their sandwiches on homemade breads, and make all their sides right there in the kitchen – sides such as potato salad, pasta salad, baked beans and cole slaw. Sandwiches include smoked turkey, egg salad, pimento cheese, pastrami and many others, including bologna! My personal favorite is the pimento cheese. Sandwich prices are $4.79 for half, and $7.49 for a whole one (but as the menu states, the sandwiches are “ginormous”).

It is extremely difficult to try to pass by the dessert case without buying one. Tempting taste treats such as the Six Layer Bar, Cheesecake Brownie, Gooey Bar, Pretzel K, Peanut Butter Chocolate Swirl and Pecan Toffee Bar (these are only a few). A full bar is $3.49, while a bite size is $.99.

They have one of the best dogs (Gollydog) around – an all-beef kosher hot dog fully loaded for $6.99, including chips and drink! There is also a pulled pork BBQ plate ($7.59) with three sides, and either homemade cornbread or one of the freshly baked sandwich breads. On Friday GollyWhoppers offers freshly baked croissants and Waldorf Salad.

Also offered are large sandwich trays, dessert trays, fruit trays, sides, etc. available for catering, with some items available for purchase by the pound.

GollyWhoppers is open Monday through Friday from 11 a.m. until 8 p.m., Saturday until 4 p.m. and Sunday until 3 p.m. A nice, friendly place to visit offering delicious, freshly prepared foods.

Thoughts On The Mathews Sentencing

It is not by coincidence I haven’t submitted an opinion piece in some time to the Chattanoogan.  The topics I cover are generally vitriolic in regards to local political decisions and their makers regarding public safety and I do not wish to associate my name with more noble subjects such as that of the heroic death and cowardly murder of Chattanooga Police Sergeant Tim Chapin, ... Thank You, Judge Mattice And Chattanooga

I would like to thank Judge Mattice for handing down a 30.5 year sentence for Kathleen Mathews.  Obviously, no amount of jail time, fines, or lashings can bring back Tim Chapin.   A 30-year sentence will, however, make the world just a little safer.  That's what Sgt. Chapin would have wanted.  He was a protector and sacrificed his life so the rest of ... (click for more)
