Wayne and I were downtown on a recent Saturday afternoon, and discovered it isn’t that easy to find a place when it is 3:00! We found a lot of places open at 4:00 or even 5:00. Of course, there were a few places, but we were looking to go somewhere we hadn’t been.

We finally called The Coffee Table, 118 Cross Street, just off Mountain Creek Road (behind Merv’s), and they were open. They are located in a remodeled house that is very nice and cozy.

We found that they have the same menu as The Big Table, but The Coffee Table has an espresso bar featuring Chattz coffee, mochas, lattes and other coffee items. I started off my visit with a delicious Cappuccino (I was also pleased it was served in a cup with a HANDLE – why do some places serve hot drinks in glasses or handleless cups?). While we perused the menu, I enjoyed the Cappuccino.

We were offered a special menu with two casseroles of the day ($7.99) as well as two soups ($4.25). I decided on the Beef Burgundy Casserole with a cup of Corn Chowder (homemade hot lunch items are served with a choice of soup or salad). Wayne ordered a Virginia Ham and Baby Swiss Sandwich on a Kaiser roll ($6.25). He ended up making it a “Half and Half” – half a sandwich with a choice of soup or salad for $7.

I enjoyed the Corn Chowder, but for me it had too many potatoes. I like to be able to taste the corn. For Wayne, he prefers the corn with a lot of potatoes. So, there you go; everyone does not always like the same things! What a dull world it would be if they did!

All sandwiches are made with Boar’s Head meats and cheeses. Other sandwiches include Grilled Chicken Breast with Pepper Jack Cheese, Smoked Beef Brisket with red onion and horseradish cream, and Black Forest Turkey with Swiss Cheese. Choices of bread include 12-grain, whole wheat, French hoagie, or a wrap.

Some of the regular menu items for lunch are Creamy Chicken Enchiladas, Pot Roast served with potatoes and carrots, and grilled Fajita Marinated Chicken Alfredo. Several salads are also offered.

Dinners include the same items as lunch (for a little more $), plus a New York Strip Steak and Rainbow Trout. Dinner prices range from $8.95 to $13.95 and include soup or salad and two vegetables of the day. Dinners are served only at The Big Table next door.

The Coffee Table (and The Big Table) has homemade desserts (but we were just too full to try one).

We enjoyed our late lunch here and especially enjoyed our conversation with the lady serving us that day. We would definitely recommend a visit to The Coffee Table for a leisurely lunch.

Hours for The Coffee Table are Monday through Saturday from 6:30 a.m. until 5:30 p.m. Closed on Sunday. Hours for The Big Table are Tuesday through Thursday from 11 a.m. until 8 p.m., and Friday and Saturday until 9 p.m. The Coffee Table can be rented for parties after closing at 5:30 PM. And since The Big Table offers catering, you know where to get the food!

He gave the restaurant a complete face lift before officially opening on Nov. 8. The retro fifties theme ... (click for more)

Thoughts On The Mathews Sentencing

It is not by coincidence I haven’t submitted an opinion piece in some time to the Chattanoogan.  The topics I cover are generally vitriolic in regards to local political decisions and their makers regarding public safety and I do not wish to associate my name with more noble subjects such as that of the heroic death and cowardly murder of Chattanooga Police Sergeant Tim Chapin, ... Thank You, Judge Mattice And Chattanooga

I would like to thank Judge Mattice for handing down a 30.5 year sentence for Kathleen Mathews.  Obviously, no amount of jail time, fines, or lashings can bring back Tim Chapin.   A 30-year sentence will, however, make the world just a little safer.  That's what Sgt. Chapin would have wanted.  He was a protector and sacrificed his life so the rest of ... (click for more)
