The College of Charleston got off to a hot start Saturday afternoon at the Carolina First Arena to grab a 62-50 win over UTC, snapping the Lady Mocs’ 13-game win streak.
Chattanooga drops to 18-7 overall and 13-3 in the Southern Conference and maintains a one-game lead over Charleston, who improves to 18-7 overall and 12-4 in league play.
The Cougars made 10 of their first 12 attempts in the game and got out to a 24-12 lead. They kept the pressure on and were 14-for-28 in the opening period including a 7-for-13 performance from beyond the arc.
The Lady Mocs went 13-of-49 in the game for a season-low 26.5 percent shooting performance making just six 3-pointers. Free throws kept Chattanooga close with the Lady Mocs hitting 75 percent (18-of-24).
Senior Jenaya Wade-Fray (Madison, Ala.) went 10-for-10 from the charity stripe matching Chattanooga’s all-time best percentage. She posted her fourth double-double of the year with a team-high 15 points and 10 rebounds.
Senior Shanara Hollinqeust (Sylacauga, Ala.) recorded her 13th double-double of the year with 14 points and a game-high 11 rebounds.
The Cougars outrebounded Chattanooga 39-33 and outscored UTC 18-10 in the paint.
Chattanooga will return to action Saturday to host Appalachian State at the McKenzie Arena in the first game of a double-header. The game is slated to tip at 5 p.m. and will be aired live on 105.1 FM.
