Monday, February 08, 2010 - by Judy Frank

A one-day health and fitness event designed to teach elementary school children and their parents the benefits of healthy lifestyles won the support of Signal Mountain town council members

During a brief 35-minute meeting, the council approved a resolution pledging support for “Kids in the Kitchen,” which will be held on Saturday, March 13, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Thrasher Elementary School in the town.

The event – which will be open to the public free of charge – is sponsored by the Junior League of Chattanooga.

Co-sponsors include Chattanooga-Hamilton County Health Department, UTC and Thrasher, as well as several local dieticians, chefs and restaurants.

The interactive event will feature demonstrations by chefs, games, healthy snack ideas and physical activities all aimed at informing students from kindergarten through fifth grade the part that cooking, nutrition and exercise play in healthy lifestyles.

“Free giveaways are guaranteed to the first 100 attendees,” the junior league said in its press release announcing the event.

Giveaways and prizes are being provided by a variety of businesses and organizations, including: Cohutta Bank, Nino’s Pasteria, Southern Star, Sweet Gipsy, The Tree House, Mountain Education Fund, Signal Mountain Athletic Club and the Town of Signal Mountain.

“Kids in the Kitchen” is supported by the Association of Junior Leagues International and its member leagues.

“The program began in 2006 in an effort to address the rapid rise of childhood obesity and the associated health issues children have due to being overweight,” according to the press release.

Thank You, Judge Mattice And Chattanooga

I would like to thank Judge Mattice for handing down a 30.5 year sentence for Kathleen Mathews.  Obviously, no amount of jail time, fines, or lashings can bring back Tim Chapin.   A 30-year sentence will, however, make the world just a little safer.  That's what Sgt. Chapin would have wanted.  He was a protector and sacrificed his life so the rest of ... (click for more)
