Temple Hangs On Against Silverdale For 66-63 District 5-A Win

Crusaders' Scott Hits for 29; Seahawks' Randolph Nails Double-Double

Monday, February 08, 2010 - by Dennis Norwood

The Tennessee Temple High Crusaders capitalized on the red hot shooting of junior point guard Quan Scott and a meticulous pressing defense to garner a hard-fought 66-63 win over Silverdale Baptist Academy Monday night in Temple's Vance Gymnasium. The win avenges a loss to the Seahawks on the road back in January.

It was a high-energy contest that saw seven lead changes, 13 ties and the longest lead by either team at eight points.

With a two point lead at the half and the Seahawks grabbing most of the rebounds in the first 16 minutes of play, Temple coach Mark Alexander knew he had to make some changes.

"It all boiled down to us playing harder. We were up two at the half," said Alexander. "I was not pleased at all. We were lethargic, just not hustling and so I challenged them at half time and they had to step up and meet the challenge," he continued, "Silverdale was getting all the 50/50 balls, every loose ball they were getting to first. And I told them it not's going to happen guys and that's one reason I went to the press," remarked the second year varsity coach.

The Crusaders ran a tight full-court press off just about every throw-in in the third quarter and part of the fourth.

"That helped us a lot," Alexander said, "It helped us to get some easy baskets. I think our pressure and our intensity in that third quarter really helped us to turn the game around."

Scott, a transfer from Brainerd and the cousin of Grace's Brandon Herman, set the tone for the Crusaders as he netted all but three of Temple's 11 first period points. He finished the night with a game high 29 tallies including two 3-pointers. Coach Alexander pointed out, "He's averaging somewhere around 18 points per game. He's really hard to guard, he's so low to the ground and he can shoot the three and drive for penetration. He runs everything for us."

Also in double figures for Temple, now 7-15 and 3-6, was JacQueze Robinson who had 11 points before fouling out in the fourth quarter and Justin Ragsdale with 11.

Silverdale was led by Drew Randolph who collected a double-double on the night with 19 points and 10 rebounds. The Seahawks, 4-9 and 1-5, got 18 from Josh Riley along with 13 from Wil Amos. Henry Frick had a good night, as well, with nine points, five assists and seven rebounds for Silverdale.

Just as Scott was the top gun for Temple in the first half, scoring 17 of their 26 points, Randolph was the gunnery sergeant for Silverdale, netting half of the Seahawks 24 first half markers.

As the two teams traded baskets throughout the second half, the Crusaders began to put a little steam on at about the 1:14 mark in the third set of eight and continued to build that pressure to open the final stanza. After getting out to an eight point lead with 3:15 left in the game, the Seahawks came storming back behind the shooting of Riley. Riley's two free throws at 41.2 seconds to go brought the Seahawks back to within two at 61-59. A lay-up by Temple's Justin Ragsdale at 31.1 followed by a Silverdale bucket by Henry Frick had the score at 63-61 Temple.

After Frick's basket, the Seahawks went into a full-court press and Ragsdale caught up to a baseball pass just outside his own charity stripe and with 17.5 seconds hit the lay-up to push the home team out to a 65-61 lead.

Riley made good on both ends of a double bonus to get Silverdale back to within two but Dexter Peterson made good on the front end of a one-and-one to put the final at 66-63.

Spencer Mossburg put up a three from the left corner with point-7 seconds to go only to see it rim out.

In the girls' contest, Silverdale came up a 47-28 winner behind the double-double of Kelsey Dishroon. Dishroon led all scorers with 16 points and added 11 rebounds to pace the Lady Seahawks. Mariah Massingill added 16 points including two-treys for Silverdale.

Senior Cassi Combs led the Lady Crusaders with 11 points including two 3-point goals.

Silverdale is now 9-6, 4-2, while the loss sends Temple to 0-23, 0-10 for the year.

Thoughts On The Mathews Sentencing

It is not by coincidence I haven’t submitted an opinion piece in some time to the Chattanoogan.  The topics I cover are generally vitriolic in regards to local political decisions and their makers regarding public safety and I do not wish to associate my name with more noble subjects such as that of the heroic death and cowardly murder of Chattanooga Police Sergeant Tim Chapin, ... A Good School Takes Involvement - And Response

As I have read the articles concerning Normal Park School I can’t keep from thinking when our children started to school in the 1960‘s. The two elementary schools in the city that were considered tops were Barger and Woodmore. We did not live in the zone for either school so we looked for a house to buy that was zoned for Woodmore.   We found ... (click for more)
