UTC And Bryan Students Present Chopin Recital

Tuesday, February 09, 2010

The UTC Music Department and Bryan College Music Department will present a joint recital by piano students of Dr. Sin-Hsing Tsai (UTC) and Dr. Sigrid Luther (Bryan College) on Feb. 27 at UTC. The all-Chopin program is the first in a series of concerts spanning into the fall of 2010, celebrating the 200th anniversary of the birth of Frédéric Chopin. The concert begins at 7:30 p.m. in the Roland Hayes Concert Hall and is open to the general public free of charge. The same concert will be performed on Feb. 26 at Bryan College.

For this program, the students will present Chopin’s four ballades and scherzos. The ballades, to be performed by UTC students Priska Sentana, Alex Ridder, Yeaji Lee, and Johan Sentana, were written between 1835 and 1842 and are considered some of the most challenging pieces in the piano repertoire. Each ballade is distinct in character but all display nobility in their motives and a romantic working out of their various themes. The Chopin Scherzos are also self-contained works more notable for their altering intensity and lyricism than for any spirit of playfulness. The four scherzos will be played by Bryan College students Jarod Soltis, Natalie McGehee, Kimberly Kennett, and Jason DuRoy (alumnus of both Bryan and UTC).

Thoughts On The Mathews Sentencing

It is not by coincidence I haven’t submitted an opinion piece in some time to the Chattanoogan.  The topics I cover are generally vitriolic in regards to local political decisions and their makers regarding public safety and I do not wish to associate my name with more noble subjects such as that of the heroic death and cowardly murder of Chattanooga Police Sergeant Tim Chapin, ... Thank You, Judge Mattice And Chattanooga

I would like to thank Judge Mattice for handing down a 30.5 year sentence for Kathleen Mathews.  Obviously, no amount of jail time, fines, or lashings can bring back Tim Chapin.   A 30-year sentence will, however, make the world just a little safer.  That's what Sgt. Chapin would have wanted.  He was a protector and sacrificed his life so the rest of ... (click for more)
