The Arts and Sciences girls basketball team finished the first half of their Class A quarterfinal game with a four point deficit, but fought back to claim the 58-39 victory over Scotts Hill Wednesday afternoon in Murfreesboro.

The CSAS Lady Patriots were behind 23-19 when they headed to the locker room for the halftime break.

CSAS managed just one field goal in the second quarter.

"We played terrible in the first half," CSAS head coach Clay Martin said after the game. "We came out good, but then went into a lull. We looked a little lost and maybe they were tired"

Whatever it may have been, the Lady Patriots responded in the second half.

"We told the girls it's up to them," Martin said of his half-time speach. "We either come out and play or we are going home. Our bags are already packed. They responded and came out and played."

After a field goal by Scotts Hill guard Michaela Thompson to open the second half, CSAS went on a 9-0 run, giving them a 28-25 lead.

Scotts Hill took a two point 30-28 lead on a three by Brittany Montgomery with 4:10 left in the third quarter. That would be the last lead for Scotts Hill as the Lady Patriots turned up the heat.

A Kayla Kelly steal and lay-up gave CSAS a two point, 34-32 lead, with a little more than three minutes remaining in the third quarter. CSAS would not trail again and led 41-32 by the end of the third quarter.

"We were able to force some turnovers and get some easy buckets in the third quarter," Martin said. "We got our engines running and our crowd was great. That breathed some new life into us."

The Lady Lions were unable to score for the remaining three minutes of the period and it was four minutes into the fourth before Scotts Hill's Montgomery hit a three-pointer to put points on the board ending CSAS' 10-0 run.

CSAS outscored Scotts Hill 22-9 in the third quarter and went into the final period with a 41-32 lead.

Two pairs of free-throws late in the quarter were the only other points the Lady Lions managed to score.

Robin Anthony led CSAS with 15 points. Courtney McPherson and Kayla Kelly each had 11 and Chariah Gordon had 10. Kayla Kelly also had seven rebounds and six steals.

The Lady Patriots will play Moore County (26-7) who beat Wayne County 51-42 on Friday at 12:30 EST.

The Class A state championship game is set for Saturday at 3 p.m. EST.

Thoughts On The Mathews Sentencing

It is not by coincidence I haven’t submitted an opinion piece in some time to the Chattanoogan.  The topics I cover are generally vitriolic in regards to local political decisions and their makers regarding public safety and I do not wish to associate my name with more noble subjects such as that of the heroic death and cowardly murder of Chattanooga Police Sergeant Tim Chapin, ... A Good School Takes Involvement - And Response

As I have read the articles concerning Normal Park School I can’t keep from thinking when our children started to school in the 1960‘s. The two elementary schools in the city that were considered tops were Barger and Woodmore. We did not live in the zone for either school so we looked for a house to buy that was zoned for Woodmore.   We found ... (click for more)
