Thunderstorms Bring Some Local Flooding, Property Damage

Friday, March 12, 2010

Heavy rains brought some flooding in the Chattanooga area on Friday morning.

The storm that brought the downpour along with thunder and lightning was moving quickly through the area, however.

The National Weather Service in Morristown issued a flood warning early Friday afternoon for Bradley, Hamilton, Meigs, McMinn, Polk and Monroe counties.

At 1:22 p.m., heavy rain showers were causing creeks to rise to bankful and some street flooding in East Ridge and in Cleveland. It was enough to stop some traffic on both cities.

A house was flooded in East Ridge.

Lightning struck a home in the upscale Enclave subdivision in Hixson. At the residence of Jim Mullenix, lightning shattered the brick chimney and also caused extensive damage throughout the home. However, it did not catch fire.

A number of trees were uprooted in Whitfield County. The storm destroyed a mobile home and blew the roof off several barns.

An AirTran plane that was struck by lightning had to land at the Chattanooga Metropolitan Airport on Friday afternoon. The plane had been headed to Atlanta from Washington, D.c.

The plane made a safe landing shortly after 4 p.m. The passengers were diverted to another plane.

Thoughts On The Mathews Sentencing

It is not by coincidence I haven’t submitted an opinion piece in some time to the Chattanoogan.  The topics I cover are generally vitriolic in regards to local political decisions and their makers regarding public safety and I do not wish to associate my name with more noble subjects such as that of the heroic death and cowardly murder of Chattanooga Police Sergeant Tim Chapin, ... A Good School Takes Involvement - And Response

As I have read the articles concerning Normal Park School I can’t keep from thinking when our children started to school in the 1960‘s. The two elementary schools in the city that were considered tops were Barger and Woodmore. We did not live in the zone for either school so we looked for a house to buy that was zoned for Woodmore.   We found ... (click for more)
