Jim Schaap To Give Public Reading At Covenant College March 16

Monday, March 15, 2010

Dr. Jim Schaap, Covenant College's 2010 Nick Barker Writer in Residence, returns to Covenant to give a public reading on March 16, at 7 p.m. The event will be held in Brock Hall 118/120/122. All are welcome to attend.

Dr. Schaap is a professor of English at Dordt College. He spoke on "Amazing Grace" in Covenant's chapel in January.

An award-winning novelist and essayist, Dr. Schaap has authored many books, including Sixty at Sixty: A Boomer Reflects on the Psalms, Romey's Place, and Touches the Sky. Stories and articles he has written have been published in journals such as Christianity Today, Prairie Schooner, The Reformed Journal, and Image.

The Nick Barker Writer in Residence program is made possible by the generosity of an anonymous Covenant alumnus who wanted to honor the late Dr. Nick Barker, former professor of English and vice president for academic affairs. This grant enables the English department to bring to campus each year an established writer to teach an intensive writing course, to interact with students, and to present a public reading and a chapel address. This grant has previously brought to Covenant's campus Billy Collins, Leslie Leyland Fields, and Robert Siegel.

The views expressed by Covenant-sponsored speakers and other college guests do not necessarily represent the views of Covenant College or its constituencies.

Thoughts On The Mathews Sentencing

It is not by coincidence I haven’t submitted an opinion piece in some time to the Chattanoogan.  The topics I cover are generally vitriolic in regards to local political decisions and their makers regarding public safety and I do not wish to associate my name with more noble subjects such as that of the heroic death and cowardly murder of Chattanooga Police Sergeant Tim Chapin, ... A Good School Takes Involvement - And Response

As I have read the articles concerning Normal Park School I can’t keep from thinking when our children started to school in the 1960‘s. The two elementary schools in the city that were considered tops were Barger and Woodmore. We did not live in the zone for either school so we looked for a house to buy that was zoned for Woodmore.   We found ... (click for more)
