Covenant's tennis teams improved on their season Monday evening by taking wins over the University of the Cumberlands. The men's match started out with a sweep of all three doubles to give Covenant a 3-0 lead going into singles.
The singles spots won were No. 3, John Hirte, with an easy victory of 6-2, 6-1, No. 4, Stephen Woody at 7-5, 6-1, and No. 6, Brandon Snipes with a 6-4, 6-2 victory.
The University of the Cumberlands won at No. 1, No. 2 and a tough match at No. 5 with John Hill defeating Johnny Herberich in a close, third set breaker: 3-6, 6-1, 7-6 (5).
The women's match started out with some strong doubles at No. 1 (Myers/Cochran) and No. 2 (Ramage/Shibley) and a tough loss at No. 3 (Sizemore/Case) for Covenant to lead 2-1 going into singles.
The Covenant women then put on an impressive performance and swept all 6 singles. Jane Shibley at No. 4 and Annika Case at No. 6 had to go three sets but managed to win both of those while the other matches were won in straight sets.
The men are now 5-2, and the women 3-3. Both teams will be back in action Saturday against Milligan College at the Champion's Club. Play will begin at 12:00 noon.
