ZeroLandfill Upcycling Projects In 2009 Push Program Totals Past 300,000 Pounds

Wednesday, March 17, 2010

ZeroLandfill kicks off in April in Chattanooga, with a month-long project that will divert thousands of pounds of specification materials away from the waste stream and back into the community as a creative material for local artists and educators.

Officials said, "This is an exciting program that the interior design profession is bringing to our community."

Since 2006, ZeroLandfill events in six markets throughout the country have identified, collected, and redistributed 300,000 pounds of post professional waste items that were earmarked for disposal by local architectural and interior design firms.

A volunteer group at each site manages the ZeroLandfill program that connects these items, ranging from carpet tiles, glass samples, wall covering books, and fabric swatches to local arts educators, students, teachers, non-profits, and practicing artists who view these materials as essential to their programs.

Because ZeroLandfill is an all-volunteer community program with the goal of redesigning how waste is classified and appreciated, it relies on operating support from sponsors and underwriters. Donations and sponsor dollars are used to defray the fixed logistical costs associated with collecting, storing and handling bulk quantities of architectural samples and construction materials.

Important dates are as follows:

Pollinating Dates:
Fridays, April 2 and 9: 12-4 p.m.
Please come and drop off your items to be reclaimed. Volunteers will be available to assist you.

Harvest Date:
Saturday, April 17: 12-4 p.m.

Location:
P&C Construction, 2500 East 18th St., Chattanooga, Tn. 37405.

Thoughts On The Mathews Sentencing

It is not by coincidence I haven’t submitted an opinion piece in some time to the Chattanoogan.  The topics I cover are generally vitriolic in regards to local political decisions and their makers regarding public safety and I do not wish to associate my name with more noble subjects such as that of the heroic death and cowardly murder of Chattanooga Police Sergeant Tim Chapin, ... A Good School Takes Involvement - And Response

As I have read the articles concerning Normal Park School I can’t keep from thinking when our children started to school in the 1960‘s. The two elementary schools in the city that were considered tops were Barger and Woodmore. We did not live in the zone for either school so we looked for a house to buy that was zoned for Woodmore.   We found ... (click for more)
