Girls attending Girls Inc. of Chattanooga’s after-school programs have created the Me and my Hands Project. The girls, in grades first through third grades, created artistic expressions of what they will do with their hands in the future.
The girls’ art work makes up an art exhibit that will be open to the public at CreateHere on Saturday, March 27, from 1-3 p.m.
Local artist, Judy Britain donated her time to plan and facilitate the project. After the experience she said, “These girls were all about possibilities of what they want to be in the future and what they could do now. It was a delight to work with them. Someone very early on in my life gave me the spark that led to a lifetime of creativity. My fondest wish is that I helped with at least one spark. That will be the best way to say thank you.’”
The Me and My Hands Project was funded through an Arts Build Communities Grant from the Tennessee Arts Commission and Allied Arts of Greater Chattanooga as well as an Arts Grant from Target Stores.
The grants also provided funding for the Girls Inc.’s after-school program sites to learn the basic elements of art and how to use them through the creation of different art forms from seven cultures including African-American, Spanish, Asian, Middle Eastern and Native American. All of the girls and their families got involved, as well, by creating a large rainbow mural of the hands and feet of all the girls and family members. These works will also to be on display at CreateHere.
Admission to the exhibit is free and donations are welcome. For more information about Girls Inc. programs call 624-4757 or visit www.girlsincchattblog.com.
