"Watch Me Soar" Winners Announced

The city of Chattanooga Department of Education, Arts & Culture (EAC) in partnership with the Challenger Center announced the winners for the first annual “Watch Me Soar” Contest 2010:

First Place: Clark Hall "Air Force"

Second Place: Kathlindria Colbin "Space Quilt"

Third Place: Janeice Lindsay “Challenger Display“

The winners will meet Mayor Ron Littlefield at City Hall Wednesday, at 4p.m. to receive their prizes and recognition from the city of Chattanooga Department of Education, Arts & Culture and the Challenger Center.

The “Watch Me Soar” contest is open to youth grades 6-8 and includes three categories: essay, visual arts project, and STEM Display (science fair project).

Chattanooga Mayor Ron Littlefield said, “We are so proud of these students who are encouraged and excited about the future. We are grateful to the Challenger Center for providing the prizes, and we’re equally grateful that EAC and the Challenger Center continue to provide an innovative educational foundation for our community.”

Founding chairman of the Challenger Center June Scobee Rodgers says, "The Challenger Center at UTC continues to be a champion for the future. We need more students like our ‘Watch Me Soar’ winners. When we support new and creative opportunities in math and science education then young, curious minds will thrive."

EAC Administrator Missy Crutchfield said, “The ‘Watch Me Soar’ contest is an opportunity for EAC and the Challenger Center to work together on engaging kids in exciting learning experiences. Through this partnership, we are so honored to celebrate the legacy of the Challenger Crew and the ongoing commitment of their families to the education of our youth. We are so proud of the creativity and the success of this year’s ‘Watch Me Soar’ winners.”

The top winners for the “Watch Me Soar” contest receive a Camp Certificate for this coming summer (value $250 each), compliments of the Challenger Center. The city of Chattanooga Department of Education, Arts & Culture will present each student with a certificate of recognition as well as a ticket to the new IMAX “Hubble 3D” (which opens March 19) compliments of the Tennessee Aquarium. Additionally, each teacher/sponsor will receive a gift card, compliments of Easy Seafood.

Man Tells Police He Just Murdered His Wife

An Chattanooga man told police Monday night that he had just murdered his wife.  Police said Robert Lee Hardnett, 50. showed up at the County Jail to turn himself in at 8:40 p.m. He said his wife's body could be found at his place of employment, Power Supply Company, 1907 Daisy St.   Officers responded to that address and found the body of 34-year-old Elizabeth ... Red Bank Commissioners Choose Kenneth Welch To Replace Greg Jones; Jeno Won't Run Again

Thank You, Judge Mattice And Chattanooga

I would like to thank Judge Mattice for handing down a 30.5 year sentence for Kathleen Mathews.  Obviously, no amount of jail time, fines, or lashings can bring back Tim Chapin.   A 30-year sentence will, however, make the world just a little safer.  That's what Sgt.
